Should Catholics celebrate Earth Day? The short answer: yes.

Hear me out…

I know a lot of conservative and traditional Catholic families have quietly skipped over Earth Day for years. Not because they don’t care about the earth, but because of what it’s turned into doesn’t reflect a clear, faithful understanding of God, man, and creation. (To put it nicely!) It’s been commercialized and used as a platform for political agendas and personally, I just like to steer clear of that in my home. 😜

So when I thought about making Catholic Earth Day activities and printables for kids, I wondered if anyone would even be interested.

After a lot of thought and prayer, I decided that we don’t need to throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to Earth Day and I went ahead and made them!

At its core, caring for the earth is not a modern idea. It’s not political, and it’s not something invented recently. It’s something rooted deeply in Scripture and in the life of the Church. From the very beginning, God created the world and called it good. Then He created man in His image and gave him responsibility over creation. Not to abuse it, not to ignore it, and definitely not to worship it, but to care for it well.

That’s where we come in as Catholic parents.

Earth Day, The Catholic Way

In a Catholic home, caring for creation doesn’t have to look dramatic and commercialized. It looks like daily life lived with intention. It’s teaching your kids to turn off lights when they leave a room, to not waste food or water, to take care of their belongings, and to help maintain the home they share. It’s spending time outside, noticing the beauty of what God made, and helping children grow in gratitude instead of entitlement. These small habits form something much deeper over time. They form virtue.

And this isn’t something new that we’re trying to figure out on our own. The saints have already shown us what this looks like lived out. St. Francis of Assisi saw creation as belonging entirely to God and treated it with care and respect. St. Kateri Tekakwitha lived simply and took only what she needed. St. Hildegard of Bingen recognized the order and purpose within creation and used it wisely. St. Isidore the Farmer worked the land faithfully and trusted God to provide. St. Fiacre cultivated the earth with patience and used what he grew to serve others. None of them elevated creation above God, but they all understood their responsibility to care for what had been entrusted to them.

So instead of ignoring Earth Day completely, this is an opportunity to turn it into something faith-focused and give it a proper foundation. A Catholic foundation. One that keeps God at the center while still giving your kids something fun, tangible, and meaningful to do.
