Fall Sensory Play Ideas For Your Mud Kitchen

(That Doubles as Hands-On Learning!)

There’s something magical about fall learning outside, isn’t there? The crisp air, crunchy leaves, and the way kids come alive when they’re allowed to dig, mix, and create. This week, our mud kitchen turned into a full-blown “Pie Shop” invitation to play, and it might just be one of my favorite homeschool days yet.

We used our Jack & Link Mini Writables and Dry Erase Boards for everything from recipe cards to ingredient lists. They’re small, durable, and perfect for all kinds of learning. Just wipe, rewrite, repeat. If you’ve never used Mini Writables before, they’re dry-erasable little shapes that make handwriting and spelling fun again. And as you can see, we use them for lots of other things too!

Our Fall Mud Kitchen Ideas for “Pie Shop”

Here’s what we used:

• Mud kitchen or outdoor table (here’s ours)
• Pie tins, muffin trays, and measuring cups from Dollar Tree
• Jack & Link Mini Writables (we used them for:
  – recipe cards
  – alphabet matching to ingredients
  – “gather” tasks like “Find 3 acorns” or “Get 5 leaves”)
• Dry erase board for the “Pie Menu” and recipe writing
• Natural loose parts: leaves, acorns, flower petals, pinecones, rocks, sticks, water, and dirt

Our dry-erase board menu included “Saintly Cinnamon Crumble,” “Pumpkin Leaf Pie,” and “Alleluia Apple Muffins.”

This wasn’t just pretend play. It was reading, writing, math, fine motor skills, and faith-focused sensory play all wrapped up in one messy, joy-filled afternoon.

Hands-On Learning = Real Learning

When kids use their hands, their brains light up. Measuring dirt turns into math. Writing pretend recipes becomes handwriting practice. Following directions is early literacy. And when they’re outdoors, surrounded by God’s creation, it all clicks in the most beautiful way.

This is what homeschooling was always meant to be — curiosity first, worksheets last.

Faith + Play

To keep our hearts centered, I always throw our faith into the mix somehow, so you’ll notice our “Menu” reflects that! While they were playing, I told them this verse:

“Taste and see that the Lord is good.” — Psalm 34:8

It’s such a good reminder that every little thing — even a mud pie shop in the backyard — can be a way to glorify God through play.
