10 Ideas for Liturgical Living Over the Summer Season

As homeschooling families, summer presents a beautiful opportunity to deepen our faith through liturgical living while enjoying the great outdoors. Embracing the warm weather and longer days, we can create lasting memories and foster a love for our Catholic faith. Here are ten wonderful ideas to incorporate liturgical living into your summer season:

1. Create a Mary Garden

Dedicate a small corner of your garden to Our Blessed Mother. Plant flowers traditionally associated with Mary, such as roses, lilies, and marigolds. Use this space for family prayer time, especially for praying the Rosary. This sacred space can be a constant reminder of Mary’s presence and intercession in your lives.

2. Giant Rosary in the Yard

Gather small rocks and paint them in bright colors. Lay them out in the shape of a giant Rosary in your yard or garden. This interactive and visual project can help your children learn the prayers and mysteries of the Rosary. It’s also a beautiful witness to neighbors!

3. Sidewalk Chalk Catholic Symbols

Equip your children with sidewalk chalk and let them decorate your driveway or sidewalk with Catholic symbols. Draw crosses, fish, the Sacred Heart, and even favorite saints. This activity is not only fun but also an excellent way to share your faith with your community.

4. Outdoor Stations of the Cross

Set up an outdoor Stations of the Cross in your yard or a nearby park. Create simple markers for each station, and take time as a family to pray and reflect on the Passion of Christ. This can be particularly meaningful on Fridays or during special feast days.

5. Feast Day Celebrations

Summer is filled with beautiful feast days. Celebrate with special outdoor activities. For instance, on the Feast of St. John the Baptist (June 24th), have a water play day to remember his baptisms. For the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29th), perhaps a fishing trip or picnic by the water could be fun.

6. Liturgical Crafts and Picnics

Combine crafts with outdoor picnics. Make saint dolls or holy water fonts using clay, and then enjoy a meal outside. This can be a peaceful time to discuss the lives of saints and how you can emulate their virtues in your daily lives.

7. Rosary Walks

Take a walk as a family and say the rosary together. Not only will you get 20-30 minutes of exercise, you can get an entire rosary done at the same time. Use the Hallow app on your phone to follow along or stay on track. We love doing the rosary with Scott Hahn with Gregorian chant in the background.

8. Marian Procession

Organize a small Marian procession in your yard or neighborhood. Create flower crowns and sing Marian hymns as you process with a statue or image of Mary. This can be a powerful public witness of your devotion to Our Lady and a great liturgical living idea no matter where you live, or what season it is..

9. Outdoor Procession

The Feast of Corpus Christi, also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, is a liturgical solemnity celebrating the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. One beautiful tradition is the outdoor procession, where the Blessed Sacrament is carried through the streets in a monstrance. This public act of devotion brings our worship into the world, deepening our connection to the Eucharist and uniting us in faith. Look for a church near you that plans to hold the outdoor procession. (This feast day will be June 19, 2025 and June 4, 2026)

10. Feast of the Assumption Picnic

Celebrate the Feast of the Assumption (August 15th) with a family picnic. Prepare foods that are blue and white to honor Mary, such as blueberries, white cheeses, and Marian-themed cookies. This feast celebrates Mary’s assumption into Heaven, and a picnic can be a joyful way to honor her.

As we embrace these activities, let us remember our mission as homeschooling mothers: to raise saints and guide our children towards Heaven. Summer provides the perfect canvas to weave our faith into daily life, drawing each moment back to our true purpose here on this earth.
