What If My Homeschooler Is “Behind”?

Let’s just get this out of the way: the idea of a child being “behind” is a man-made construct that is an invention of the American public school system designed to funnel children through a rigid, industrial pipeline where they’re sorted, ranked, and evaluated based on arbitrary timelines that have nothing to do with their natural development or God-given uniqueness.

So if you’re here because you’re asking yourself “is my child behind?”… take a deep breath, mama. You are not failing. Your child is not broken. And no, you don’t need to panic about falling behind.

Learning Isn’t a Race

Let’s say it again for the homeschool mama in the back: turning 18 is not a deadline for learning.

Every child is fearfully and wonderfully made by God (Psalm 139:14), and no two are designed to grow and learn at the same pace. When we homeschool, we have the incredible privilege of honoring our child’s natural rhythm, interests, and God-given learning style. That doesn’t mean we’re ignoring academics or throwing structure out the window, it means we’re not forcing our children to conform to a system that was never designed with their souls in mind.

Children are always learning. They learn through play, through reading, through asking questions, through making mistakes, through meaningful conversations, through watching you live your life. And when we let go of the artificial timelines, we give them the space to become true autodidacts and self-motivated learners who pursue knowledge because they love it, not because they’re trying to “keep up”.

What You Can Do (Instead of Panicking)

If you’re still feeling unsure, here are a few practical steps you can take:

• Take a placement test: I recommend the free placement tests from The Good & The Beautiful. These are great for gently figuring out where your child actually is in reading and math—not where they “should” be based on age, but where they are. This is not to label or rank your child, but to meet them where they’re at.
• Observe and take notes: What do they love to do? Where do they feel confident? What kinds of things frustrate them? You can tailor your homeschooling around these observations, creating an environment where growth feels peaceful, not pressured.
• Set your own benchmarks: Maybe your 8-year-old isn’t writing paragraphs yet, but they just built a working pulley system out of LEGOs. That counts. Progress doesn’t always look like workbook pages.
• Explore unschooling and interest-led learning: Sometimes what looks like a child being “behind” is actually just a child who hasn’t been given the freedom to pursue what truly lights them up. Unschooling doesn’t mean doing nothing, it means trusting that learning is natural, that curiosity is God-given, and that children will seek knowledge when they feel safe, supported, and inspired. As John Holt wisely said, “Children learn from anything and everything they see. They learn wherever they are, not just in special learning places.” When you begin to see all of life as education like baking, building, reading, praying, playing, you’ll realize your child hasn’t fallen behind… they’ve just been learning in the way God made them to.

Peace Over Perfection

One of the biggest blessings of homeschooling is that it gives us a chance to choose peace over perfection. To stop striving. To stop comparing. To stop pushing our kids to perform for the approval of a broken system. To stop hustling needlessly.

And no, this doesn’t mean we are “anti-intellectual.” I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we love books! We love deep conversations. We love asking questions, exploring ideas, and learning about everything from astronomy to theology. But we do it because we’re raising souls for Heaven, not resumes for Harvard. We are not anti-intellectual. We’re anti-frantic, anti-performance, anti-indoctrination. Big difference.

Is My Child Behind? Or Just Out of Sync With the System?

Most of the time, when parents say their child is “behind,” what they really mean is, “They’re not doing what other kids their age are doing.” But why is that the standard?

You Will Know Them by Their Fruits

And to the voices—online, on social media, or in your own family—who scoff at your decision to prioritize your child’s soul over a six-figure salary or a spot at an elite college: you do not owe them your peace. Many of these so-called “experts” are still deeply entangled in the mindset of the public school system, one that idolizes performance, prestige, and productivity above all else. They may roll their eyes at a homeschool rooted in prayer and simplicity, but “you will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16), and sadly, much of their fruit is rotten at the core. You lift the veil to find they are anxious, distracted, focused on “stuff”, materialism, disconnected from God, and blind to the beauty of a life lived slowly and faithfully.

Remember: “For the love of money is the root of all evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). We are not raising children for college admissions offices or pushing lofty careers focused solely on money. Sure, having money is nice, but it shouldn’t be our main focus in life. We are raising saints for the Kingdom of Heaven. Let them laugh. Let them criticize. You stay the course. Because peace, holiness, and eternal salvation are worth infinitely more than any diploma or paycheck will ever be.

A Final Word of Encouragement

Of course, as homeschooling mothers, we have an obligation to give our children every opportunity to learn and grow. This doesn’t mean letting things slide, or ignoring real challenges. And yes, there is a tiny minority of families out there who don’t provide adequate education and we should always advocate for better support and accountability when needed.

But that’s not you. You’re here, reading this blog post, worrying and praying and trying your best to give your child the most beautiful, faithful, personalized education possible. It doesn’t matter whether you call it homeschooling, unschooling, or home education, you’re trying to give your child the BEST! How do I know this?
