God-Led Homeschooling: What Does It Mean to Homeschool for Heaven?

We trust God in so many areas of our lives—our marriages, our finances, our decisions—but what about when it comes to homeschooling our children? Are we really allowing Him to guide us in that, too? Homeschooling is such a personal, intimate journey (without all the school pickup lines, bad influences, and drama), but I really believe it’s so much more than just a decision to teach our children at home. It’s an act of surrender to God’s will, and a chance to shape our children’s souls with eternity in mind.

When I started asking God what He wanted our homeschool to look like and stopped caring what other people thought, everything changed.

Instead of following the latest curriculum trends or worrying if I was checking off enough academic boxes, I began asking God direct questions like:

• What do You want our days to look like?
• What does this specific child need from me in this season?
• How can I support what You are already doing in this child’s life?
• How can I curate our homeschool based on how You fashioned me as their mother and them as unique individuals?

These questions changed our focus. Because the truth is, we don’t want Babylon raising our children. We don’t want to be undoing in the evening what the public education system or strangers instilled in them all day. The time is now to train up our children and prepare them for their ultimate destination—Heaven.

Homeschooling for Heaven means that our education isn’t just about math, spelling, and memorizing facts. Our homeschool is an extension of our domestic church. Our home is a place where children come to get spiritually fed, where their weary souls find rest. When we look at homeschooling this way, it becomes clear that education is a by-product of a much, much bigger mission: raising future saints!

I’m not saying academics don’t matter—of course they do. But academics are just one piece of the puzzle. Through our homeschool, our children join us on a shared journey of sainthood. It’s about helping them recognize their own unique call from God, growing in faith together as a family, and giving them the tools to live out their vocation, whatever that may be.

Another beautiful piece of the puzzle in raising saints through homeschooling is living liturgically. Bringing the rhythms of the Church’s liturgical year into our daily lives creates such a rich foundation for our children’s faith. By celebrating feast days, honoring saints, and observing the seasons of the Church—Advent, Lent, Easter, and more—we help our children connect deeply with their Catholic identity. These celebrations and traditions turn our homes into places of sacred learning where faith is not just something we practice on Sundays, but something we live out every day. When our children see us praying, celebrating, and fasting with the Church, it shapes their hearts and minds in ways that no textbook ever could.
